If you love the 80’s, you’ll probably score pretty high on this one. If not…you’re gonna need to do some research! This All Out 80’s playlist on Spotify should get you started. It’s only 7 hours so it’s missing a lot of tunes…but it’s enough to get you going.

People always talk about the hottest bands or songs, but rarely do they break down the popular genres of the 80’s.  Let’s take a look at the top 3!

Pop/Dance: I like to group these two together, because music and dancing was very intertwined back then.  Madonna, Prince, and rap artists like Young MC were all pop stars. And we can’t leave out the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

Rick Springfield - Jessie's Girl (1981, Vinyl) | DiscogsAlternative and New Wave: This was the influx of the bands and artists from Europe. Think Depeche Mode, Erasure, Berlin, and the Eurythmics.  The US had a few really great alternative bands, too, such as The B-52’s.

Rock: Hair bands unite! Bon Jovi, Poison, Motley Crue are probably the top 3 from the 80’s. Who else was big? AC/DC, Def Leppard, and others were on the harder side. Even classic rock bands were thriving, such as ZZ Top and Genesis.  Huey Lewis and the News were huge, bridging the gap between rock and pop.

Of course, punk rock was all the rage (Dead Kennedy’s, The Ramones), but not as big as the three listed above.
