Drive To Work, Don’t Just GO LIVE Anywhere!

Team Trivia Night

Hey Ride Share Drivers!  For my first blog post about making money driving with Uber and making money driving with Lyft, I wanted to share the most important lesson I’ve learned out in the field.  This is now my #1 rule and it should be yours too.

Drive To Work, Don’t Just Go Live Anywhere!

Just like anyone with a job, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t drive to work too!  If you’re treating Uber and Lyft as a career–or at least as a real temp job–you should drive to “work” just like your neighbor and friends and, in my case, my wife does!  Sure, you’ll hear that it’s a waste and you’ll be adding those dreaded “dead miles” to your day.  But the truth is, SO WHAT?  I find myself driving a few miles after my shift to get home anyway, so I think it wouldn’t hurt to get yourself to your favorite area to give people lifts.  Here’s how I would work this out from wherever you are planning to work.

Figure Out What Area You Mainly Want To Drive Around In.

For me, being in Orange County, CA, I’ve found my sweet spot: The Beach!  Come on, who wouldn’t want to drive right next to the ocean!  Great views, less traffic, and mostly laid back people, which makes for a better working experience.  Also, this area tends to surge more, therefore, I make more money per ride!  How did I figure out the best areas for Uber in Orange County (and for Lyft)?  I’ll show you.  Here are your steps to determining where YOU should drive.

  • Determine when you plan to drive (your work schedule) and research which areas around you tend to surge at those times.  You can find out this information online sometimes in the chat rooms and such, but the best way is to take ONE DAY OFF during the week and keep an eye on your Uber and Lyft apps!  Watch when and where the surges happen, TAKE NOTES, and then the next day DRIVE TO WORK!
  • Don’t go live until you’ve reached your Prime Area.  Now, if you arrive in your preferred neighborhood and there is no surge, it’s cool.  Still GO LIVE and start working. Soon, if the trends are correct, you will have a better chance of being in a surge area when they hit.
  • Don’t chase surge or prime areas!  You’ll waste a lot of time, gas, and money–along with losing potential customers–by doing this. Surge areas change by the minute, so just be in your area and know, eventually, you’re going to get that surge money!
  • Know where you DO NOT want to drive!  I really do NOT like LA driving! I know, I’m crazy and I’m losing a lot of money, but I try to avoid it!  Still, If I get a rider going to Hollywood or LAX, I’ll take them, sure, BUT as soon as I drop them off, I set my apps to Destination Mode: Orange County!  So, get back to your area as soon as you can.

Since I’ve started following this advice, I’ve been a lot happier and my income has gone up by about 20%!  Thanks for reading and I hope this helps you make more money driving for Lyft and for Uber!
